CITRINE: READ A FUTURES BACKTEST BEFORE JUDGING ITS RETURN Independent educator outline and participant worksheet Reviewed October 11, 2026. Suggested session: six minutes plus optional questions. PURPOSE Explain what a result contains, rather than treat its headline as a prediction. Citrine is an Android app for Coinbase Advanced U.S. BTC/ETH perpetual futures. It uses a built-in strategy, not an editor for importing another trading system. BEFORE THE SESSION Install the official Google Play app and choose Explore. Standard backtesting and Paper Mode require no subscription or Coinbase API key. Do not enable live trading, connect a funded account or make a purchase for this lesson. Choose available completed dates; record the inputs before seeing the outcome. Do not select a run because it happens to win. If there are no closed trades, use that result: show the trade count and any remaining open exposure. A dash for win rate is not a zero-percent win rate. OUTLINE 0:00-1:00 Open the workspace, then backtesting. Explain the selected markets, dates, starting equity and allocation. Keep the inputs unchanged. 1:00-2:00 Run the selected period. While it processes, explain that recorded quotes, reconstructed paths and simulated fills are distinct. If processing needs longer, pause the lesson; do not imply a fixed completion time. A host may prepare the same saved run beforehand. 2:00-3:00 Open result details. Locate closed trades and positions open at end. Explain realized versus unrealized PnL with the actual shown values. 3:00-4:00 Read the accounting explanation. In current results, realized PnL is after closed-trade fees; unrealized PnL is after open-entry fees. Funding is separate from those components. Net PnL already includes recorded fees and funding. Do not subtract the fee display again. 4:00-5:00 Read funding coverage and the drawdown explanation. An unavailable input is not an observed zero. Drawdown is peak-to-trough across the accounted sequence, not only loss below starting equity or the worst single trade; it excludes intratrade swings. 5:00-6:00 Export locally. Ask someone to explain what is included in the net result and name one execution assumption. Do not ask them to share account identifiers, credentials or private trading exports. PARTICIPANT WORKSHEET (KEEP YOUR NUMBERS PRIVATE) Selected dates and markets: Starting equity / allocation: Closed trades / open positions at end: Realized PnL / unrealized PnL / funding: Net PnL / ending equity: Fees already accounted for, or separate from this result's components? What does the funding coverage say? At which points is drawdown measured? Which input or assumption would you investigate next? DISCUSSION Why can net PnL differ from closed-trade PnL? Why is a quote not a receipt for an actual fill? Why might the same midpoint movement produce a different executable outcome? What would you need to know before comparing two runs fairly? HOST NOTES Use actual app screens. The reviewer-kit PNGs are labeled simulated presentation captures, not customer returns. Keep that context when reusing them. Explain any unavailable field honestly. Simulation does not establish live performance. The outcome and critical interpretation are yours; favorable coverage, an app store review or affiliate enrollment are not conditions of using this material.
